Las Flores de Luya (Flowers of Luya) was established in 2004 when a group of 80 women from Laguna de los Cóndores cooperative decided they wanted to contribute to the Peruvian coffee sector. Their collective represents the continued strength and spirit of women producers from the region.
Coffee in Peru is grown at extremely high altitudes with nutrient-rich soil at 1800 - 2300 meters above sea level. After selectively hand-picking cherries along terraced slopes, farmers further process their harvest. Using hand pulpers to depulp cherry, they ferment the coffee for 36-48 hours. The coffee is then laid to dry in the sun on patios. After drying, coffee is sold in parchment to the cooperative.
Due to their connection to the larger Cooperative Cafetalera Laguna de los Cóndores, Las Flores de Luya has many projects in place to improve both the quality of life for producers and to improve the health of the land. In 2023, a reforestation initiative began to plant on 120 hectares in the mountains where the community lives.
